NIT Silchar  is located at about 12 kms away from the main city of Silchar between Silchar-Hailakandi road. NIT Silchar is one of the 31 National Institute of Technology (NIT)’s in India.The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)  in 2019 ranked NIT Silchar 51st among all engineering colleges in India

It was established in Silchar in the year 1967 but as a Regional Engineering College(REC).In 2002, it was promoted to the status of National Institute of Technology (NIT) and was declared as an Institute of National Importance under the National Institute of Technology, 2007.

Silchar NIT offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Engineering, Science,Humanities & Management.The institute has 11 departments.The institute has also a KV (Kendriya Vidhalaya) which has its campus there.

NIT Silchar awards B.Tech. Degree in all six subjects under Engineering Departments. Admission to all these programs is through Joint Entrance Examination – Main(JEE-Main) test. Admission to M.Tech and Ph.D courses is though GATE examination conducted by IIT. NIT’s follows the reservation policy announced by the Supreme Court of India by which 27% seats are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBC), 15% for Scheduled Castes (SC) and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (ST).

The institute gives admission to the foreign nationals through a scholarship programme of Government of India. It also gives admission to the Non Resident Indians (NRI)’s through Direct Entry for Students (DASA) an independent scheme for NRIs.

The institute has received funding over the years in a number of international and domestic research projects. The faculty of the institute has received 4 international projects in 2019 under the SPARC program of MHRD. The institute has also recieved International projects.

NIT Silchar Cultural Fest

NIT Silchar helds the technical and management festival in the month of October every year.This includes various events such as exhibitions, demonstrations, coding rounds, robotic events and interaction with guest speakers from across India.

The annual cultural festival is celebrated every year in the month of February. Various artists, singers, celebs are invited from across the country. It also includes the annual fashion show of NIT’s.
